Egypt

Abdullah Miniawy & Maurice Louca

This visionary Egyptian duo reconstructs Sufi traditions through radical electronics and free improvisation. Miniawy’s soaring vocals – trained in classical Arabic recitation – intertwine with Louca’s genre-defying compositions (of Alif and The Dwarfs of East Agouza), where analog synths warp ancient maqams into futuristic sound designs. Their collaborative work creates hypnotic landscapes that honor heritage while exploding its boundaries: handclaps morph into drum machines, centuries-old poetry addresses modern unrest. Both established solo artists, together they’ve developed a ceremonial performance style that’s equally at home in experimental festivals (CTM) and traditional spaces, proving the vitality of cross-cultural dialogue in contemporary music.
